The Dirty Projectors latest album Bitte Orca shocked music critics after its release back in June. Successful transition from an experimental/art sound (any group handpicked by Bjork to play a 300 person AIDS benefit in NY can’t be too mainstream) to radio-ready pop is nothing to sneeze at, and music blogs this spring feverishly featured the single “Stillness Is The Move”. And yet, nobody expected Dave Longstreth’s reinvention (namely, spotlighting Amber Coffman’s dizzying vocals) to have such staying power.
Despite two rather lackluster music videos (one still animation, one featuring alpacas), “Stillness Is The Move” has propelled Bitte Orca into Spin’s Top 20 Albums of 2009. The hype here in Amsterdam for their September 20th Melkweg gig is already palpable.
